Care for Babies Born Alive

A baby born alive deserves care. That principle is simple, and it should not depend on how the birth came about.

Right now in Victoria, there is no clear legal requirement that a child born alive after a failed abortion receive medical care. A baby can be born breathing, with a heartbeat, and be left without the treatment any other newborn would receive. That gap is real. And it is wrong.

This is not about the debate over abortion. It is about what we do for a living child in front of us. When a baby is born alive, that baby is a patient. A patient gets care. Every time.

We already expect this for every other newborn. A premature baby gets a warmer, a doctor and a fighting chance. A baby born alive after an abortion should get the same. To do less is to decide that some newborns matter less than others. They do not.

The demand is simple. Every child born alive gets medical care.

I will fight to require the Victorian Government to guarantee medical care for any child born alive after an abortion. Care for the baby in front of the doctor. No exceptions. No looking away.

Here is what that means in practice:

  • Any child born alive after an abortion is treated as a patient, with the same duty of care as any other newborn.
  • Doctors and nurses have a clear legal obligation to provide appropriate medical care.
  • Comfort and dignity are given to the child in every case.
  • The care provided is recorded, so the law is followed and not quietly ignored.

These are not radical ideas. They are the basics of medical decency that any parent understands.

A newborn is a newborn. The circumstances of the birth do not change what we owe that child.
