Protect Women in Prison and Shelters

Women need places where they are safe. A women’s prison. A women’s shelter. A change room where mums and daughters get changed. These are meant to be single-sex spaces for a reason.

In Victoria, that reason is being ignored. Biological males are being placed in women’s prisons, housed in women’s shelters, and given access to women’s change rooms. The women in those spaces (many of them already vulnerable, many of them survivors of male violence) are told their safety comes second.

This is about a simple truth: women have the right to spaces set aside for women. A woman fleeing violence should not be housed alongside a male. A female prisoner should not share a cell block with a male body. A mum should not have to shield her daughter in a change room.

Women have been told to stay quiet. To accept it. To pretend there is no difference. There is a difference. And pretending otherwise puts real women at real risk.

The demand is simple. Sex-based rules for women’s spaces.

I will fight to protect single-sex rules in Victoria’s women’s prisons, women’s shelters and women’s change rooms. Female spaces reserved for females. Safety put first, not last.

Here is what the pledge means in practice:

  • Women’s prisons reserved for biological women.
  • Women’s shelters kept as safe, single-sex refuges.
  • Women’s change rooms set aside for women and girls.
  • The safety of vulnerable women treated as the first priority, not an afterthought.

These are not radical ideas. They are the basics of keeping women safe.
