Restore the Speed-Camera Watchdog
More cameras. Less oversight. That is exactly the wrong way round.
Every driver knows the sting of a fine in the mailbox. Fair enough when you did the wrong thing. But when a camera gets it wrong, when the timing is off, when a fine lands that never should have, someone needs to be watching the watchers. In Victoria, no one is.
In March 2026, the Victorian Parliament passed legislation that repealed the Road Safety Camera Commissioner Act 2011 and abolished the role. The independent watchdog set up to check that cameras were accurate, fair and honest was scrapped. At the same time, the camera network was expanded. More cameras on our roads. Fewer eyes on the system that runs them.
That is not road safety. That is revenue with no referee.
This is not about dodging fines or going soft on dangerous driving. Speed kills, and cameras have a place. This is about a simple principle: when the state fines you, the state should be checked. An honest system has nothing to fear from independent oversight. A system that removes its own umpire should worry every driver, every tradie and every family on the road.
The demand is simple. Bring back the independent Road Safety Camera Commissioner.
Here is what that means in practice:
- Reinstate an independent Road Safety Camera Commissioner with real power to audit the system.
- Independent checks on camera accuracy, so a faulty camera is caught, not trusted blindly.
- Public reporting on errors, so Victorians can see the truth about the fines they pay.
- A clear, fair path for drivers who are wrongly fined.
- Oversight that grows with the network, not oversight that vanishes as cameras multiply.
These are not radical ideas. They are the basics of a fair system: if you are going to be fined, someone independent should be making sure it is done right.
You work hard for your money. When a camera takes it, you have a right to know the system is honest.
